Finding positive ways to cope with sadness or anxiety should be a priority for maintaining a healthy mind and body. Yoga is a great stress reliever, one of the reasons why it is among the top fitness trends in the world. It has been estimated that 55 million individuals will practice yoga by the end of 2020. And while participating in a yoga class will help you attain inner peace and a strong body; yoga outdoors can be especially beneficial. Studies have shown that doing mindful physical activities in nature can heal the body and mind. Moreover, it helps you to emotionally and spiritually connect to the natural world. Here’s how doing outdoor yoga can help you have a happier and healthier life.

It helps you reconnect with nature

People all over the world are getting increasingly hooked on technological devices and are spending more time indoors. As a result, many children and adults are now experiencing nature deficit disorder, which means that they have lost the ability to find meaning in their natural environment. People who don’t get enough exposure to nature can develop a fear or aversion to it that may be expressed in ways harmful to the planet. Protecting our environment, we also find opportunities to do yoga outside. Doing asanas by the beach or in your garden will certainly calm your mind, help you feel more relaxed, and give you a newfound appreciation of the natural world.

It can reduce depression

Depression is one of the most common mental health disorders, and according to the World Health Organization, over 260 million people worldwide suffer from it. Since depression may lead to physical health conditions that range from chronic headaches to high blood pressure, finding a method to cope with it in a positive way should be prioritized. Doing yoga in nature reduces depression through emotional and psychological healing. Try doing balasana, savasana, and uttanasana first thing in the morning while you’re out in your backyard, as these poses fight depression and put you in a positive mood throughout the day.

It can improve your relationship with others

Working in a toxic environment and other daily stressors can make people feel irritated or just “over it.” As these feelings build up, what happens is that people who experience these emotions regularly may be less patient with others, and they may be more prone to anger or even violence once they reach their limit. To clear your head and heart of these negative emotions, find an outdoor space where you can do simple yoga exercises. A quiet spot in your garden, a wooded area in your neighborhood, or the nearest riverbank are all ideal places where you can stretch and meditate while doing yoga. Doing yoga in a green environment reduces your awareness of toxic emotions.

Also, it enables you to feel gratitude, awe, and wonder, which are positive emotions that can lead to happiness. These emotions will be reflected in the way you treat people. You’ll find yourself more patient and tolerant as you continue to do yoga regularly in nature. As you become kinder and more compassionate, your relationship with others will improve.

Yoga in the big city

While it’s easy to do outdoor yoga if you live in a rural area, practicing yoga in nature is possible even in the city. You can turn a concrete space into a yoga haven by adding live plants.

Try doing yoga in nature and see how it can enhance your yoga, your health, your happiness, and your wellbeing.
