Amrita Yoga has been presented at multiple international yoga conferences, in Australia, Europe and India.
Yogafest: Somers, 2019
Amrita Yoga was presented at Yogafest, in Australia, on November 1-4th. Yogafest is for those interested in yoga and meditation. The event is run entirely by volunteers and located at Somers on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula.
Yogafest was started by Eugenie Knox, the founder of Dance of Life. The initial event was to raise funds for the tsunami victims in Asia. After this first community-based and volunteer run event began in 2006, it has been running annually, and biannually 2011. It’s one of the most long-running yoga events in Australia. Now, all the proceeds from the event are given to Amma’s charitable organizations and activities in Australia.
In addition to all the teachers working on a voluntary basis, participants in the retreat each helped out for a few hours, for example cooking or cleaning, as part of the Karma Yoga practice of the retreat.
In 2019, for the first time, Brahmacharini Shobha was a featured guest at the event, among many other local teaches of yoga and meditation. Her sessions were on Philosophy and Vedic Chanting, Amrita Yoga, Yoga Nidra and Meditation.
In addition to classes on Yoga and Meditation from different teachers, there were many sessions related to well-being, rejuvenation and fun, including: art therapy, nature walks, silent disco and nighttime stargazing.
Amrita Yoga at the Ministry of AYUSH Yoga Conference
On October 10-11, 2017, a 2-day International Yoga Conference was held in Delhi, India and sponsored by the Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy). Forty-four nations were represented as well as many government agencies and organizations in the private sector. Two Amrita Yoga teachers from Amritapuri, India, Hemaa and Radhika Radhakrishnan, also attended the conference. Ann Kristin Ulrichsen was the chosen and sponsored representative from Norway by the Indian Embassy to attend this conference.
Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu, the Vice President of India opened the conference. His theme was Yoga for Wellness. “Wellness means physical, mental, spiritual, and social well-being. Wellness is more than being free from illness; it promotes quality of living and lifestyle. Though Yoga is essentially spiritual, its use in the healing and prevention of diseases, and its potent effect on radiant health have been well established from time immemorial. Research has demonstrated the effectiveness of yoga in the management of many psychosomatic disorders. Yoga is emerging as one of the most cost effective and economic health care options in India and abroad,” said Naidu.
Physicians and researchers shared their latest findings in the field of yoga research with delegates. The research that was presented included trends of yoga for wellness, yoga for cancer control, the role of yoga in integrative health care, yoga for depression and mental health conditions, yoga for women’s gynecological conditions, and yoga for pain management.
“I was so impressed by the Indian Government’s holistic approach to health,” said Ann Kristin. “It’s so amazing to see people in high levels of AYUSH, the government and the private sector, taking the research on yoga and homeopathy seriously and making plans to implement yoga as a wellness strategy everywhere.”
Ann Kristin herself used yoga to recover from a serious accident requiring major surgery to insert screws and wire in her right ankle. The doctor had told her she would never be able to run again and would limp for the rest of her life. Yoga has tremendously helped her. Not only is she able to walk normally again, but by the power of yoga and walking meditations, she can run and does not limp at all.
