NEW DELHI: The Smriti Irani led Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry has set up a Committee on Yoga Education in Universities headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Yoga guru Prof. H.R. Nagendra, Chancellor, Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana, Samsthana, Bengaluru.
The Committee will identify Yoga courses to offer and the syllabus for conducting NET in Yogic Art and Science.
The Committee has been set up following a Consultative meeting on Yoga Education in Universities chaired by Irani on 2 January, 2016. It was decided at this meeting with Vice chancellors to set up Department of Yogic Art and Science in the Universities and constitute a Committee on Yoga Education in Universities to look into various aspects pertaining to setting up of Departments of Yogic Art and Science.
This Committee has been tasked with identifying the courses and programmes in Yogic Art and Science and the levels at which they can be offered, spell out the scope of programmes offered at Certificate, Diploma, Degree, Post Graduate Degree/Postgraduate Diploma and Research levels, and to develop broad details of the curriculum in core and elective courses. It will also prescribe the syllabus for conducting NET in Yogic Art and Science, determine the eligibility qualifications for students for joining Yoga Education Programme at different levels and prescribe the qualifications of faculty of Yoga.
The committee will also identify universities where Departments of Yoga already exists and consider their upgradation.
On the committee are Prof. Suresh Lal Barnawal, Head, Department of Yoga Dev Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya, Gayatrikunj-Shantikunj, Haridwar, Prof. lshwar Bharadwaj, Head, Department of Yogic Sciences, Gurukul Kangri University, Haridwar, Prof. Neel Kamal, University of Patanjali, Haridwar, Swami Atmapriyananda, Vice-Chancellor, Ramakrishna Vivekananda University, Kolkatta, Pandit Radhey Shyam, Director, Ujjain Yoga Life Society International, Prof. 0 P Tiwari, Kaivalayadhama, Prof. Subramanayam, Adviser, Vivekananda College, Madurai, Prof. P. Venkat Rangan, Vice-Chancellor, Amrita University, Rupen Bhowmik, Working President. Indian Yoga Federation, Agartala besides officials from UGC and AYUSH.
The Committee will also be able to engage Experts, rapporteurs and raconteurs to draw up its report which it will submit to the HRD Ministry within 45 days.
