Yogasana practice is about understanding that the substratum of all movements is awareness. In the light of this awareness, we can burn away our latent tendencies and be eternally free. The practice is not about pushing the body. Patience and enthusiasm are most important in this journey of Yoga. —Amma

Spiritual leader, humanitarian, and visionary Satguru Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi—known to millions simply as Amma or Mother—tirelessly serves the world community. Every year, Amma is invited to tour from around the globe. She travels to Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia, and Europe. Amma guides people to their ultimate fulfillment, providing insights and solutions to such global issues as the environment, the mistreatment of women, and religious disharmony, to name but a few.
At the center of Amma’s life is her darshan. This tender and caring embrace, sought by millions, that she offers so abundantly. With a heartfelt hug, Amma meets one and all. She listens to their problems, rejoices in their happiness, uplifts, and inspires all to serve their fellow beings. Her divine love, strength, and self-sacrifice are the supreme model.
Amrita Yoga® is a school of yoga born from the divine resolve of renowned spiritual leader and humanitarian Satguru Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, or Amma, prompted by unconditional love and an attitude of service to the world. Focusing on Awareness with Heart-centered Intention, Amrita Yoga® transcends the physical asana practice to deepen self-awareness and experience the interconnectedness of all life. Practicing yoga in this way creates an inner and outer harmony through which we realize our divine potential.
“It is not enough to practice yoga for just one or two hours daily. If a person afflicted with a critical illness wants to recover, he must, in addition to taking medicines, follow a particular diet and get sufficient rest and sleep. Likewise, to gain the full benefits of yoga, we must lead a disciplined and value-based life. By practicing yoga mindfully, we will be able to do every action in life with awareness. […]”

Amrita Yoga® isn’t just about the asanas—it’s much more. It’s about aligning with our true Self. If yoga were only about aligning parts of the body, anyone with perfect bodily alignment would be Self-realized. Alignment is an inside-out approach. Aligning to the inner presence enhances the panchakoshas (five layers of the body described in the yoga scriptures) and is the actual […].

Amma’s vision for Amrita Yoga® is a holistic blend of yoga courses taught in the spirit of love and service. Based on her vision, we provide classes that inspire and show practical ways for people worldwide to lead heart-centered lives and to nurture the discovery of their true nature and innate potential.
“The feeling closest to our true self is love. Our lives are meant to be born in love, to live in love, and eventually end in love. In truth, love has no end; it is eternal and connects every aspect of creation—human beings with each other, with nature, and with God. Thus, its effulgence is forever within us as our very essence.”
—Amma
To provide a comprehensive yoga program rooted in the ancient and practical universal principles taught by Satguru Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi (Amma). Amrita Yoga® students cultivate a holistic attitude (mano bhavana), embrace practical Vedanta, gain physical strength, mental equanimity, and enhanced awareness of their hidden abilities.
Yogic practices are taught to enable us to reach a state of unity that leads to a progressively deeper inner journey. As a result, it allows us to awaken to this love within and act from our true identity.
We encourage our students to apply the insights gained on the yoga mat to their daily lives. This way, we learn to observe ourselves and accept the different situations we encounter with an even mind. With such reflections, we gain clarity and begin to respond rather than react to situations.
In Amma, we can see someone genuinely living from an open heart. Upon meeting Her, people often feel inspired and encouraged to practice Her teachings. As a result, they find their unique way to live with a sense of deep purpose, commitment, and fulfillment—to live closer to the heart!
At Amrita Yoga, our sole purpose is to provide you with the means to reach a state of unity with body, mind, and soul—thus, understand your true nature and live from your heart.

Inspired by our beloved Amma, our team consists of international staff who offer varied skills for a noble cause amidst busy work schedules and global time zones.
Amrita Yoga could not have grown to what it is today without the efforts and support of the many volunteers who offer their valuable time and energy.
The joy and beauty of selfless service surround every aspect and every moment of our yoga programs. Under Amma’s guidance, Brahmacharini Shobha was tasked with formalizing a school of yoga in accordance with Amma’s vision.
Reflecting Amma’s guidance, our core program content and training methods focus on Awareness with Heart-Centered Intention.
” […] We are committed to upholding Amma’s example of love and selflessness and sharing India’s rich and ancient yoga tradition with the world. We offer yoga as an essential tool to experience the innate happiness within. […]”
Under Amma’s guidance, Brahmacharini Shobha was tasked with formalizing a school of yoga in accordance with Amma’s vision.
“For me, Amrita Yoga is a priceless gift from Amma. I’ve lived in the German Ashram since 2007 after meeting Amma on Her second world tour. With a teaching background in different kinds of bodywork, contemporary dance, and Hatha Yoga, I was thrilled to attend Amrita Yoga retreats as soon as they started in Amritapuri. My happiness was immense to be invited to the first Amrita Yoga teacher training class in Amritapuri in 2014! Through its movement, flow, stillness in the asanas, and the power of the mantras, Amrita Yoga has been a wonderful awareness practice for me! I feel privileged to regularly give open classes in the German Ashram and retreats in other European Amma Centers.”
“When I met Amma in 1994, my long search for meaning in life began to take shape. Since then, my husband and I have been actively involved with Amma’s organization in Switzerland, and our involvement has deepened since the founding of the M.A. Center.
As a primary school and theater teacher, I have always been passionate about education and the transfer of knowledge. As a mother of two daughters, I also trained to teach Integrated Amrita Meditation (IAM) for children and have organized several family and children’s satsangs and retreats in Germany and Switzerland.
I studied Bharata Natyam (dance) for 20 years, where I learned the essence of mindful movement. To me, conscious movement is like a balm for the soul. Amrita Yoga is such a comprehensive and profound practice that I am deeply touched by it each time I practice. It allows me to move with mindfulness and brings me closer to awareness of my true self.
Since 2017, I have been teaching Amrita Yoga weekly at the M.A. Center Switzerland and have led several Amrita Yoga retreats in Switzerland and Italy. I truly enjoy teaching Amrita Yoga, as Amma’s presence can be felt in every session.”
“Meeting Amma in 1997, completely changed my life. Before moving to the ashram in 2000, I worked as a nurse and taught health education at the college level. Since then, I have been practicing yoga and believe deeply in its power to help the body heal—I have personally undergone five heart operations, and each time, yoga played a crucial role in my recovery and regaining strength.
Since discovering Amrita Yoga, I have greatly enjoyed sharing this powerful transformation with others through teaching. In 2017, I joined Brni.Shobha on a two-month yoga tour, where I witnessed firsthand how Amrita Yoga can transform and open people’s hearts regardless of their backgrounds. It truly feels miraculous how Amrita Yoga works. My only wish is to serve Amma’s children in the best way I can.”
“Since childhood, I have been educated in the rich cultural values of India. Despite the many challenges I have faced in my own life, I have always been eager to serve humanity as best as I can—hoping to set an example that, no matter what, we can overcome obstacles with courage and a positive mindset. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Business Management though my passions lie in music, the arts, and photography. Through Amma’s guidance, I was led to learn and teach Amrita Yoga, a path that has brought immense benefits to my personal life. The experience of learning and teaching has been transformative, shaping my personality in profound ways.
I have completed Teacher Training for adults, youth, kids, and seniors. I enjoy teaching Amrita Yoga for Kids and Seniors. My deep respect and desire to serve older adults allow me to approach them with the utmost gentleness and care.”
I meet Amma and had my first darshan with Her at Amritapuri in 2007.
Originally from Ireland, I worked as an engineer for many years at IBM.
My Yoga journey started 21 years ago, when I attended a local Iyengar class in Dublin.
The desire to learn more about Yoga inspired me to quit my job and come to India. I made several trips over the years to learn from various yoga teachers all over Northern India.
While back home in Ireland in 2007, I felt a very intense desire to go back to India and eventually ended up at Amma’s Lotus feet, the feet of Maha Yogini herself.
Eventually I became a permanent resident of Amritapuri Ashram, where I immersed myself in the study of Amrita Yoga, which I practice and teach.
When someone asks me why I do Yoga, I simply answer: “If done correctly, it helps you become a better person.”
“I was born in Tamil Nadu, South India, and had the blessing of meeting Amma as an infant which inspired in me a deep commitment to serving humanity. I have dedicated my life to the ancient wisdom of yoga and the advancement of holistic health, volunteering in several humanitarian projects along the way. With a background in Physics I completed an intensive Teacher Training course in 2016, specializing in yoga for adults, youth, and kids.
I am passionate about teaching adults and offer private sessions at the beginner level. I also teach the Integrated Amrita Meditation (IAM) technique for corporate groups and kids. My journey with Amrita Yoga includes coordinating yoga classes at Amritapuri and traveling across India to teach yoga while managing a team of Amrita Yoga teachers. I feel each moment of teaching is a precious opportunity to share Amma’s message of unconditional love with the world.”
“After meeting Amma in 2000 I felt the desire to stay connected. Hence, I hold regular Amma satsang sessions at my place in Tel Aviv. I have a strong interest in the healing arts, therapy, and working with children. Although I was formally trained as a teacher of Iyengar yoga tradition, my heart was with Amma. Eventually, I dropped that particular style because I felt the strong urge to teach a form of yoga that comes from the heart. This is when I was offered to teach Amrita Yoga. Amma and Amrita Yoga have become my path and essence and it feels absolutely natural for me to teach Amrita Yoga.”
“I was introduced to Amma as a child and have spent my life volunteering across various humanitarian service projects. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology and have completed the Amrita Yoga Teacher Training course, specializing in teaching adults, youth, and kids. My classes are primarily for adults and youth, and I bring a lively blend of humor to engage young students effectively. I prepare and give special classes for seniors, too. I am a team player and gladly offer my skills to the Amrita Yoga team across various projects wherever needed.”
“Upon meeting Amma in 2001 in San Ramon, CA, I was completely captivated by Her extraordinary divine presence. My life quickly began to flow in new directions bringing changes in relationships, jobs, and residence. In 2006, I became actively involved with Amma’s Washington DC ashram. Since 2017, I lead classes at the DC ashram and co-teach at retreats during Amma’s US tours. Unlike other schools of yoga, Amrita Yoga is a practice of love, longing, and divinity; always returning our awareness to the heart, thereby transcending our preoccupation with the body. It is a tool for going deep into our true nature, enabling us to cultivate greater levels of joy, stillness, and love.”
“Shortly after I met Amma in 1996, I moved to the Santa Fe ashram. I visited Amma’s home in Amritapuri–an unforgettable adventure—before I returned to complete my Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education. Currently, I work for the New Mexico School for the blind or visually impaired. Although yoga was always a part of my life, it was always more of an exercise rather than a spiritual practice. This changed with Amrita Yoga as it has given me a new way to relate to my body and “inner being”. By Amma’s grace have I been lucky enough to study under Brni Shobha. Now I teach weekly classes at the Amma Center of New Mexico.”
“After meeting Amma in Mumbai in 2006, we shifted soon to Kuwait and are associated with the Amma Kuwait organization since 2010. Since then we’ve been involved with Amma’s ashram and all activities of Amma’s Kuwait organization. After Amma asked me during Gurupurnima 2018 to do the Amrita Yoga Teacher’s training course (TTC), I was blessed to do this under Brni Shobanaji as well as attend the one-week TTC of the IAM technique as per Amma’s guidance with Swamiji Atmananadapuri in August 2019. It is Amma’s abundant grace to do this humble service in this faraway land. It gives me immense satisfaction whenever I share the little knowledge She has imparted in me. I feel grateful for these valuable seva opportunities and for how Amma guides me in my spiritual sadhana.”
“I first met Amma in 1990. In 2018, I completed the Amrita Yoga Teachers Training Course and began instructing open classes in Amma’s ashrams. Each year, I split my time between Amma’s San Ramon Ashram in California, USA, where I work as a nurse and massage therapist, and Amritapuri, India, where I serve at Amrita Kripa Hospital. My practice emphasizes bringing Amrita Yoga’s focus on ‘heart-centered intention’ into my work as a nurse, massage therapist, and every aspect of life.”
“I met Amma in 2003. Since then I attended weekly satsang in San Ramon. With a BA in Fine Arts, I offer my selfless services year-round teaching others to knit, sew, and paint. I am a special education teacher for grades one and two at the San Ramon district and am working on a master’s degree of the same. I first studied yoga when I was 17 and loved it. In my late 40’s I received an Honorary Teaching Certificate from the Yogic Science Research Foundation in Lansing, Michigan. YSRF spread Pavanamuktasana traditional Yoga which they called Medical Yoga and in 2016 my Amrita Yoga teacher training from Shobha in Amritapuri. I lead a weekly Gentle Amrita Yoga class at M.A. Center San Ramon most Saturdays.”
“Amma’s infinite tenderness called to my heart many years ago at an Amma program in New York. With a blink of that cosmic eye, this inexplicable moment changed my life forever. I took what felt like a quantum leap of faith and moved with my wife to Amritapuri. It was a shock at first! Wait, where am I? Yoga became my friend. It took me inward and I found more peace. From the blessing of Amma, Amrita Yoga’s sweetness and strength are a clarion call for the times we live in; it answers the timeless question of “What is the purpose of human birth?” by gently turning the practitioner inward to the heart. Join us, all are welcome to Amrita Yoga classes!”
“Devoted to Amma since 1989, the inspiration to learn and practice Amrita Yoga was ignited by the message that yoga is “a heart-centered practice of breath and awareness in every movement.” I intend to offer Amrita Yoga into settings and populations where Amma’s vision and yoga are less known and available, and which speaks to the heart and soul of the practice of yoga. At 71, I look back on 50 years as a Pediatric Occupational Therapist, 35 years as a Doctor of Oriental Medicine, and 40 years of practice as a Somatic Bodyworker and Cranial-Sacral practitioner.”
“The first time I saw Amma was on an American television show in 2007. Soon after, I received my first Darshan in Detroit, Michigan. At the time, I was actively exploring yoga through various retreats, classes, and workshops, but my search found new purpose after meeting Amma. Once my daughters finished high school and left for college, I immersed myself in various seva projects at the Chicago Ashram. Discovering Amrita Yoga rekindled my love for the practice, and under the loving guidance of Brahmacharini Shobha ji, I pursued Amrita Yoga certification. I feel truly privileged to be part of the Amrita Yoga team, sharing the joy of spreading Amma’s Love through this beautiful program.”

"The meaning of the word yoga is 'coming together' or 'joining'.” Yoga unites our body, breath, mind, and awareness in the proper way. If we can control our bodies, we will be able to control our breath. If we can control our breath, we will be able to control our minds. If we can control the mind, we will be able to rise to Self-realization."
