Amrita Yoga
If the real principles behind yoga are understood and practiced, we will be able to imbibe many other values such as patience, forgiveness, and forbearance. It will also develop the love within us.
—Amma
Amrita Yoga®, founded in the ancient Indian teachings of Vedanta and the oneness of all things and beings, is uniquely designed and dedicated to reviving and preserving yoga culture.
Amrita Yoga® is a school of yoga born from the divine resolve of renowned spiritual leader and humanitarian Satguru Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, or Amma, prompted by unconditional love and an attitude of service to the world. Focusing on Awareness with Heart-centered Intention, Amrita Yoga® transcends the physical asana practice to deepen self-awareness and experience the interconnectedness of all life. This technique creates an inner and outer harmony through which we realize our divine potential.
A traditional school of Hatha Yoga upholding Vedic principles, Amrita Yoga integrates the four main paths of yoga into one asana practice: Bhakti (devotion), Jnana (wisdom), Karma (selfless action), and Raja (contemplation, creativity, and meditation).
Reflecting Amma’s guidance, the core program content and training methods focus on the theme of Awareness with Heart-centered Intention. Amrita Yoga bridges the gap between the traditional Eastern practice and the modern needs of the West. Adopting Amma’s philosophy of embracing all, Amrita Yoga offers programs relevant to everyone, of any age or gender, and is designed to encourage an ongoing practice of “the middle way.”
The body and mind are both interconnected and interdependent instruments. Through Her unconditional love and selfless service to humanity, Amma constantly reminds us of the relationship between God, the world, and the Self. Amma says, “The world and God are one. The Creator and creation are not two.”
Amma has been the perfect catalyst for a state of equilibrium in the lives of millions of people. It is precisely this connection and harmony that is the true goal of yoga.
A healthy mind and body are vital for holistic living. Just as the ancient seers or rishis divined the holistic practices of yoga and meditation, great masters continue to interpret and adapt its age-old teachings for the changing times with the aim to elevate human beings to their true potential as living embodiments of Universal Consciousness. This is the living heritage of yoga that India has to offer. It is not one that has been artificially created to be sold like any other commodity. The value of these living traditions and teachings cannot be measured. Amrita Yoga is a tool to experience the treasures of this ancient wisdom. Our courses, classes, and retreats cultivate self-integration and the interconnectedness of all life, awakening hidden abilities and potentials.
