Yearning

This poem reflects on the soul’s yearning for home and the search for answers beyond the restless movement of the mind. Through the image of a speeding car and an inner flame, it reminds us to turn within and let the heart guide us toward the Self.

The Yearning

(To teach the senses
The answer is not outside.)

A longing for home,
Often misunderstood,

Is the key in the trunk
Or under the hood?

And we polish the surface
Of this magical car,

Speeding through a lifetime—
Was the answer on Mars?

No matter how fast
The speedometer goes,

We can’t quite catch up
To that mirage in the flow.

But spin it around,
Put the crate up on blocks,

Watch your mind yank the wheel,
Watch it chatter, then balk.

And turn the ignition
On the flame in the heart.

Let it light the way
To the Self—for us moths in the dark.
