amritayoga.com_Yoga Talks_Reluctance and Lessons Through My First ExperienceI work as a teacher at Amrita Vidyalayam, Sadashivagad, Karwar. I would like to share my experience about the Amrita Yoga session held in our school on 15th and 16th November, 2014.

I have been working in this school since June 2001.

In our school yoga sessions were often held but I never participated in any of these sessions because of a notion that I will not be able to do it. I suffer from lower back pain and, because of this, standing or sitting for a long time becomes a punishment for me. I even get muscles catching in the body at any time and in any part of the body. In such cases, after a few seconds the pain will become unbearable. So I had always believed doing any kind of exercise will become a problem for me. Then, I don’t know why, but I thought of attending the session and sitting on a chair.

It was already amazing to watch Brahmacharini Shobhana’s enthusiasm and how her participation inspires the children. So I was curious to check it out. The session started at 8:30am on the 15th of November. I sat down on the floor and kept a chair beside me thinking that, if I cannot sit down, I will use the chair. In her satsanga Brahmacharini Shobhana told her story and said that if she can do yoga then anyone can do it. Her speech inspired me and I decided to do the yogasanas. It was not comfortable doing it in a saree but, except for three or four asanas, I did all the others. While going back home, I decided that the next day I would come prepared, wearing comfortable clothing (churidhar) and that I would try to do all the asanas.

As decided, I did try to do all the asanas on the second day. I thought: ‘Why was I thinking I wouldn’t be able to do yoga?’ Surprisingly, I didn’t get any kind of body pain and I felt a soothing peace within. I was really thankful to ShobhanaJi and VinayaJi for teaching us Amrita Yoga.

I feel a great peace. I remained in awe that, in a 2-Day Amrita Yoga Retreat, I was able to benefit with such a depth of peace. I said to myself then that, if I practice it daily, it will surely take away my stress and I will be able to lead a peaceful life.

I am grateful to our beloved Amma Mother for sending her disciples here and giving me a beautiful experience, practice and knowledge.
