Why Amrita Yoga?

Families practiced yoga together in the same way that they ate, worked and worshipped together. Yoga practice has been a part of sadhana (spiritual practices) since the Amritapuri Ashram began.

Our retreats cultivate and support a holistic attitude (mano bhavana) with a focus on three aspects: skill development, practical living (Vedanta) and enhanced awareness. Amma emphasizes the synthesis of the major paths of yoga. Amrita Yoga hence integrates the four major paths of yoga into the asana practice: Bhakti Yoga (yoga of devotion), Jnana Yoga (yoga of wisdom), Karma Yoga (yoga of selfless action), and Raja Yoga (yoga of contemplation, creativity and meditation).

Incorporating stories, examples, poems and quotes from Indian scriptures, each asana class features a central theme such as compassion, concentration, equanimity, patience, enthusiasm, self-confidence, grace, self-effort, or Mother Nature.

By transcending polarity through our yogic practices, we reach a state of unity…

The uniqueness of Amrita Yoga is that the program is dedicated to introducing practitioners to a more traditional style of yoga directly guided by Amma. The teaching style reflects the simplicity and humility of Amma. Ancient tools and techniques are incorporated to offer an effective journey to each participant.

Our Philosophy: ‘Amrita Yoga – Living From The Heart’

Amrita Yoga is not designed to begin and end with asana sessions. Amma encourages an ongoing practice of ‘the middle way’, which is a synthesis of all four yoga paths. This supports a loving and focused life, consciously reflecting on and choosing to live in a balanced, harmonious and holistic manner.

Students are encouraged to continuously apply experiences and insights gained on the yoga mat into their daily life by consciously witnessing themselves, accepting the different situations they encounter, and reflecting on their actions.

By transcending polarity through our yogic practices, we reach a state of unity from which we fully express our true essence. This leads to a progressively deeper inner journey, connecting us to the eternal source, the Supreme Consciousness.

Amma says,

“The real flow of life lies in unity, in the oneness that arises out of love. Love is our true essence and the foundation of life.”
