Silent Meditation Retreat Introduction
“Observing a vow of silence is good for those who really want to attain the goal.” – AMMA
Meditation is more precious than gold…
Amma often says, “meditation is more precious than gold.” She encourages us to imbibe these simple words so we can attain the greatest wealth in life – genuine and lasting happiness. She constantly reminds us that the purpose of human life is Self Realization and to use what time we have to strive for this goal. Furthermore, as Amma’s global message is to love and serve, She teaches us to consider that every thought, word and action, every meditation can ultimately be dedicated to bringing peace and happiness to others; and that this is in fact the best way to ensure peace and happiness for ourselves.
A Week of Silent Meditation
Practicing meditation and yoga in the ashram of a perfect living Master is the most conducive way to make progress on the spiritual path. The Silent Retreat Program encourages regular and disciplined practice in Amma’s loving presence. Participants frequently remark at their newfound ability to develop self-mastery and transform the usually turbulent mind into a powerful ally.

Location

“Silence will help prevent unnecessary dissipation of energy. We lose a lot of energy through talking.” -AMMA Situated on the shores of the Arabian Sea in Kerala, India, the Silent Retreat Program is conducted at Amma’s ashram at Amritapuri, a spiritual epicenter for thousands of seekers flocking to receive Amma’s divine embrace. To accommodate the overwhelming response to the retreats at Amritapuri, India, two new halls have been constructed; the Shanti Mandiram and Shakti Studio. The Shanti Mandiram is the dedicated temple for this program and the Shakti Studio will be the adjacent dining hall exclusively for retreat participants.

Why Take a Silent Retreat at Amritapuri
“Our mind is like a cat. We may take care of it with a lot of affection, but the moment our attention wanders, it will put its head in the pot and steal some food.” -AMMA Hundreds of people have now experienced these retreats and having learned how to cultivate the art of taking refuge in the Self, their lives have been profoundly transformed. Benefits include clarity and strength of mind to achieve one’s goals, growing in self-confidence, overcoming stress and tension, opening to more love and compassion and being able to remain steady in an ever-changing world. The retreats help to reinforce and strengthen existing spiritual practices and provide the foundation for a lifetime of meditation practice. Connecting with this sacred and ancient wisdom within ourselves brings meaning to life. Amma’s teachings on loving awareness provide the foundation of all retreats; We learn to sit with awareness, walk with awareness, perform every yoga asana with awareness; how to eat with awareness. Awareness leads to understanding and love. When we understand and love ourselves, we are better able to understand and love others. Amma’s simple technique of breath awareness infused with the MA-OM mantras and eventually merging into silence is the basis of the technique employed. This makes the retreats suitable for all levels of experience in meditation and yogasana from beginner to advanced. The asana class helps to prepare the body for longer periods of sitting without discomfort.
Accommodations and Food
“Surrender makes you silent.” AMMA The International Office will do their best to accommodate participants in silent rooms, as either shared or private. A fresh and healthy diet greatly enhances prolonged meditation practices, so the meals will be specially catered for participants with a mix between sattvic Western and Indian food, including platters of fresh tropical fruit each morning for breakfast. “Real solitude is solitude of the mind; it means one-pointedness of the mind. Even a beautiful place will not give you peace of mind if the mind is agitated.” AMMA

“By changing a very common misconception – the idea that your problems are to be found in the outer situations of life – you can remove your problems once and for all. Understand that the difficulties are to be found within your own mind. Once you become aware of this, you can begin the process of removing your inner weaknesses. Meditation is the method that is used to achieve this. Only the inner silence, stillness and relaxation which you gain through meditation will help.” -AMMA
We invite you to come sit with Amma in Her loving embrace and dive into the ocean of bliss and inner freedom.
