The Divine Guidance of the Guru
University Chancellor to students, a Guru to devotees and guiding light of Amrita Yoga – just three elements of Amma’s extensive job description.
Swami Amritageetananda Puri writes about his experiences meeting new students from different campuses of Amrita Univeristy – Amritapuri, Bengaluru and Mysuru. He explains to newcomers that Amrita University is perhaps the only university where the students can meet the Chancellor in person and discuss their problems! The Chancellor of Amrita University is, of course, Amma.
Since not all students are devotees, Swami Amritageetananda “explains why we regard and worship human beings – we mean Amma, who is Jagadamba (the Divine Mother) in an unassuming human form!”
He explains further:
The Teachings are Offered
I told the students of my experience many years ago – I went for a house visit in North India. The devotee host was an elderly person who had a twenty year old skeptic son. The young man asked me why we worship human beings. Very bluntly, I told him that we are worshiping God in human form.
. . .”Amma, who is Jagadamba (the Divine Mother) in an unassuming human form!”
Later the young man took me to his room, which contained life size photos of the famous pop singer Michael Jackson. Now it was my turn to ask him “Why do you worship human beings!” Every one of us has an “Aradhana Purushan” meaning “Hero Worshipers”. It can be a film star, a cricketer, or any famous personality, and we want to be like him or her.
In the case of our youngster, Michael Jackson was his hero and role model. He wanted to become a pop singer like Michael Jackson. So too, we worship Amma and run to Her without brakes because Amma is the very embodiment of what all of us want – Infinite Joy, Infinite Love and Infinite Freedom. This is what we get by worshiping Amma!
The Teachings are Then Practiced
If you want to learn cycling, anybody can teach you. To learn to ride a motorcycle, you go to a more experienced person and so too to learn car driving. And if you want to learn flying you have to go to a very experienced instructor pilot! The more complicated the vehicle, the more qualified the teacher should be!
. . .Amma is the very embodiment of what all of us want – Infinite Joy, Infinite Love and Infinite Freedom.
And the most complicated and sophisticated vehicle is the Human Mind! Like a car that can travel at 1,000 kms per hour, but it does not have a steering wheel and brakes! This is the human mind! And the teacher who trains us how to “fly” this machine to its ultimate destination, this teacher is called the “Guru” – our Amma!
I have a violin, but that doesn’t mean I know how to play it. I have a flute, or a guitar but that doesn’t mean I know how to use them! I have to go to a teacher who trains me how to use them. I have a mind, but that doesn’t mean I know how to use it. I have to go to a teacher, and that teacher is called a Guru – our Amma.
The Teachings are Finally Realized
Amrita means “Deathless”. Our Indian scriptures say “O Man, you are Immortal! Your very nature is Divinity! Discover this Truth through Worship, Service and Meditation!”
Every one of us wants “Continuous unbroken happiness – this is Amrita which only Spiritual Masters like Amma can reveal to us!”
The beauty of the Creation lies in its variety. Countless species of living beings, countless beautiful forms – the Guru teaches us that all these beautiful forms come from the One Supreme Being. And in time they finally merge into that Supreme Being! This entire universe is one vast cosmic family! This is the Universal Knowledge – the Viswa Vidya. University is for knowing the unity in Diversity. This is Amrita University.
And where can this be known? It has to be known in one’s own heart! The most important knowledge to be gained is “Who am I, what is this creation which I see around me, and what is my relation with it?” This inquiry, guided by my Guru, takes me deep within myself and I discover the Ultimate cause of myself and the creation – this firm abidance in knowledge.
