Connection of Yoga and Ayurveda

Yoga and Ayurveda are two interrelated branches of the same great tree of Vedic knowledge that encompasses all of human life and the entire universe.

  • In this regard, it is important to understand their respective roles in the Vedic system.
  • Each has its unique place and function, and each overlaps into the other on various levels. As complimentary Vedic sciences, they originated from the same source and share a common history, language and cultural foundation.
  • Integrating Ayurveda into your yoga practice can bring about a greater sense of balance, harmony, self-awareness and health.

For Health and Consciousness

  • Ayurveda and Yoga are first and foremost spiritual sciences.
  • They are maps to guide us along the spiritual journey.
  • They teach us how to create balance in order to attain perfect health.
  • As we better understand the union of our body, mind and soul, we are able to extend our life span and enhance our wellbeing.
  • The deepest purpose of these sciences is to provide the framework for Self-realization, to know the true Self, Sat Cit Ananda (Existence-Consciousness-Bliss).
  • We must recognize that our bodies and minds are constantly changing and that we live in a world of change and duality.
  • The human task is to discover the veiled part of us that is always there – the knower, the seer, the infinite, unchanging Eternal Source.
  • Ayurveda directly incorporates the mystical science of Yoga and Vedanta (the philosophy of non-dual or unified consciousness).
  • The main aims of Ayurveda are the prevention, treatment and cure of disease, as well as the promotion of health on four levels: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.

What Students Say

"Very Helpful"

“I really enjoyed the course! It has inspired me to learn more about Ayurveda. It has been very helpful to learn what’s right for my body type.” – Jessie Ryan (Age 26) New Zealand

"Beautiful Yoga Retreat"

I would like to express my gratitude to the teacher for this beautiful yoga and Ayurveda retreat in Amritapuri, which was inspired and guided by Amma’s teachings. As an Ayurvedic yoga therapist and yoga teacher myself, I was really looking forward to attending such a retreat here at the ashram. I found this program as a great introduction to yoga and Ayurveda. This course provided a very good theoretical approach which covered many aspects of Ayurveda in a very short time. The yoga sequences according to the different doshas, were very well balanced. The Pitta sequence was so cooling for me that that I had to put a blanket on at the end of the class, which never happened to me in class in India. Thank you very much for this beautiful yoga retreat!!!– Jyoti Pina (Age 40) France

"Inspiration To Learn More"

“This course helped me in many ways. It opened my eyes and ears to realize that in order to grow spiritually one needs to also have discipline with food. The Ayurveda part has given me inspiration to learn more about my body and the foods that will help me grow spiritually and potentially expand my consciousness. The yoga/pranayama/ meditation helped me to stay focused.” – Katarzyna Rosenplanter (Age 43) USA/Germany

"Teachers Were Excellent"

“I very much enjoyed the Ayurveda/ yoga retreat. I feel extremely fortunate I had the opportunity to learn such useful and beneficial information from such excellent teachers. The retreat was unlike any retreat I had attended before in that it not only included theoretical knowledge but also incorporated practical ways to apply that information in everyday life. What more can I say? The teachers were excellent, the course was comprehensive and well-structured, and best of all it took place in the presence of a living master.” – Michael Anderson (Age 32) South Africa
